Perimenopause & Menopause Acupuncture Treatment

Are hot flushes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes or fatigue making it harder to feel like yourself?

Perimenopause and menopause can affect much more than your menstrual cycle. Changes in sleep, energy, concentration, emotional wellbeing and physical comfort can influence your work, relationships and everyday quality of life.

At Essential Acupuncture Clinic in Adelaide, Julie and our team offer caring, personalised acupuncture and Chinese medicine support for women moving through perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause. Your care is based on your individual symptoms, health history and goals—not a standard treatment given to everyone.

Appointments provide a calm and private space where you can feel heard, slow down and receive thoughtful support for your wellbeing as a whole.

Understanding Perimenopause and Menopause

Menopause is a natural stage of life. It is reached when you have gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period and there is no other medical cause. In Australia, the average age of menopause is approximately 51, although the timing is different for every woman.

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause. During this time, hormone levels can fluctuate and your menstrual cycle may become shorter, longer, heavier, lighter or less predictable. Symptoms can begin years before your final period and may change over time.

Some women experience only mild changes. For others, symptoms can be physically exhausting and emotionally difficult.

A Caring and Holistic Approach to Menopause Support

Menopause is not simply a collection of isolated symptoms. Poor sleep may reduce your ability to manage stress. Night sweats can leave you exhausted the following day. Persistent fatigue, pain or brain fog may affect your confidence, relationships and capacity to cope with daily responsibilities.

At Essential Acupuncture Clinic, you are cared for as a whole person. Julie listens carefully to your concerns and considers the physical and emotional changes you are experiencing together.

Your personalised care may include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine where appropriate, and practical discussion about sleep, stress and lifestyle. Complementary care can also be used alongside treatment recommended by your GP or menopause specialist.

You do not need to explain everything perfectly or feel that your symptoms are “not serious enough.” If these changes are affecting your quality of life, you deserve to be listened to and supported.

What Acupuncture Do For Women During Menopause

As a holistic acupuncturist and a mum, I understand how importance for us to have a good health, therefore, our clinic focuses on Women’s health. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into carefully selected points on the body. Treatment is tailored to your individual presentation rather than menopause being approached in exactly the same way for every woman.

Julie may consider:

  • The frequency and intensity of hot flushes or night sweats

  • Your sleep pattern and the times you wake

  • Stress, anxiety and changes in mood

  • Fatigue and daytime energy

  • Headaches, migraines or muscular tension

  • Joint or body aches

  • Menstrual changes during perimenopause

  • Digestion and appetite

  • Your general health and medical history

  • Medicines, menopausal hormone therapy and supplements you currently use

What Does Scientific Research Say?

A 2019 pragmatic randomised trial involving 70 women reported that a short course of standardised acupuncture was associated with reductions in several moderate-to-severe menopausal symptoms compared with delayed treatment.

A 2026 systematic review examining 158 studies of complementary therapies found promising results for several approaches, including acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The review found moderate-certainty evidence suggesting possible benefits from Chinese herbal medicine for some overall menopausal symptoms and sleep outcomes, and from acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine for sleep.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Menopause Support

Where appropriate, Julie may discuss individually prescribed Chinese herbal medicine as part of your care.

There is no single herbal formula suitable for every woman experiencing perimenopause or menopause. A prescription is selected according to your symptoms, constitution, medical history and current health needs. Two women with similar hot flushes, for example, may require different approaches if one also experiences poor sleep and anxiety while the other experiences headaches, fatigue or digestive discomfort.

Take an hour away from your busy day to rest, breathe and receive personalised care in a calm and welcoming environment.

Your Personalised Menopause Consultation

Your first appointment gives you time to discuss what has been changing and how those changes are affecting your life.

Julie may ask about:

  • Your menstrual cycle and when symptoms began

  • Hot flushes, sweating and temperature changes

  • Sleep quality and night waking

  • Mood, stress and emotional wellbeing

  • Energy, concentration and memory

  • Headaches, pain or muscular tension

  • Digestion and appetite

  • Vaginal, bladder or sexual-health symptoms

  • Exercise, nutrition and daily routines

  • Current health conditions, medicines and supplements

You will then receive an acupuncture treatment tailored to your presentation. Your progress may be reviewed through changes in symptom frequency or intensity, sleep quality, energy, emotional wellbeing and your ability to manage daily life.

If Chinese herbal medicine is appropriate, Julie will explain how to take it and review the prescription as your symptoms change.
